Think of your to-do list as a menu.
Many people feel the weight of their to-do list as a crushing burden which they can never complete. Tasks get added to the list faster than they can do them, so they feel they are getting further and further behind.
Yet we can only do one thing at a time. Rather than focusing on the long list of other things we have committed to do, I invite you to focus on the next thing you will choose to work on.
An analogy I offered to clients today was to think of the to-do list as a menu. When you go to a restaurant with a lot of options, you don’t feel the optionality as a burden, as you know you can’t eat everything in one meal. Instead, you pick what you want to eat right now for this meal in this present moment.
You can take the same attitude with the to-do list. Rather than stressing about how you can’t do everything, pick one thing to work on right now, and start making progress. What attracts your attention? Where do you feel #energy or excitement? Pick that off the menu, and get started. This present-focused approach will counterintuitively lead to making more progress on the to-do list, as you’ll spend more of your energy on executing rather than needlessly stressing.
What will you choose from your menu today?
