When can success be a detriment?
You might think success is an unalloyed benefit; being successful tends to bring you more success, as you get more opportunities for impact.
However, being successful with those new opportunities sometimes requires you to change what you’re doing. If you can’t let go of the habits and mindsets that previously brought you success, you’ll be stuck doing the same kind of work, repeating the pattern you already know. Further success requires letting go of what previously worked.
As Po Bronson puts it in his book What Should I Do With My Life?, “Failure’s hard, but success is far more dangerous. If you’re successful at the wrong thing, the mix of praise and money and opportunity can lock you in forever. It is so, so much harder to leave a good thing.”
The same applies to change. When your situation changes, or the world changes around you, you have to recognize it and let go of what worked before the change, and experiment to find what works in your new world.
What do you need to let go of to find your next level of success?
