I fell prey to both of those (my manager “should” support me, and I “shouldn’t” talk myself up), and they actually intersect. Because I was assuming my manager was omniscient and could see all the work I was doing, I didn’t share my wins, and that meant they didn’t see the value of my work and therefore they were less supportive.
