Leadership is the skill of getting others to follow you.
People think that becoming a leader means waiting for somebody else to make you a manager or declare you a leader. They think that people will listen to them if they work their way up the promotion ladder.
But a manager that has no way to get others to follow them other than relying on their title (and implied punishment via performance review) is a terrible leader.
Leadership involves learning what others care about, and convincing them that they will achieve their goals if they follow your lead. That’s win-win leadership where everybody creates long-term success together.
In my Maven lightning lesson next Monday (July 28th), I’ll share my own journey into leadership, starting as an engineer frustrated that no one would listen to me, to leading business strategy and operations for a $100+B business as the Google Search Ads Chief of Staff for six years. I’ll share my tips on how to grow your executive influence so you can lead others to make the right things happen.
