If it’s really important to you, commit to show up.
For years (decades!), I said I wanted to do more strength training. And I didn’t do it. I knew the benefits, I knew it made me feel good, and I just never made the time.
Last year, I finally admitted I wasn’t going to lift on my own, so I joined a nearby gym which has a use it or lose it policy to strength training sessions. But I still didn’t always make it twice a week as planned, because I would try to slot sessions in last minute after my work and family commitments.
This year, I committed to just showing up twice a week and pre-emptively blocked the time off in my calendar. It makes a difference. I can see the progress when I show up consistently (plus the trainers push me harder knowing I want it).
If you say something is important, but are trying to fit it in among all of your other commitments, it’s not important to you. Commit to the important things first, and accept that maybe you can’t get to all of the other things.
P.S. I highly recommend the Functional Lifestyles gym if you live in the Palo Alto / Mountain View area.
