Don’t compare how you feel to how other people look.”
“”
“When we see successful people, we often believe that they are just naturally talented, and therefore completely confident. Since we feel our own insecurity and lack of confidence, we imagine we can never be like those people since they appear fundamentally different. ”
“”
“Interestingly, they often feel the same way about us, because they are comparing how they feel (insecure and doubting themselves) to how we look (projecting our strengths). We don’t see how hard they’ve worked to develop their strengths, and how much effort they put into concealing their weaknesses. ”
“”
“One insidious distortion I fall prey to is to unconsciously choose whatever dimension makes me look worst in comparison. In other words, everybody has strengths and weaknesses, but I compare my weaknesses to other people’s strengths, and never compare my strengths to their weaknesses. This serves to reinforce my imposter syndrome, but is clearly a biased perspective. ”
“”
“When you compare yourself to others, I invite you to consider these potential distortions before drawing conclusions. Take a moment to imagine what other people might see in comparing themselves to you, or how your best friend might provide a more supportive viewpoint. And remind yourself that “Comparison is the thief of joy”, take a deep breath, and get back to making your intended impact. ”
