What are you missing? ”
“”
“A sign of a healthy culture is that people feel the psychological safety to speak up. In Google’s Project Aristotle research study, this was the top characteristic of effective teams, even more important than who was on the team. When everybody can safely speak up, teams make better decisions because multiple perspectives are considered.”

“I am starting to believe that how you do things matters more than what you do. In other words, the means matter more than the ends. If you do things in an inclusive way, you will get better results than if you try to force your brilliant idea onto others, because your idea may only work for somebody like you. ”
“”
“When somebody speaks up with an idea that makes you feel angry or defensive or ashamed, the “natural” response is to fire back and tell them why they’re wrong, or to focus on your emotional discomfort (e.g. white fragility). And if you do, you will never learn what truths you might be unaware of, especially if you’re in a position of organizational power or societal privilege. ”
“”
“I’ve started to ask the question “What am I missing?” to cultivate this #curiosity mindset in myself – it’s not about who’s right or who’s wrong, but about learning and understanding different points of view so that we can better navigate this shared world. ”
“”
“Next time you notice yourself getting defensive when somebody tells you something that challenges your worldview, try taking a deep breath, and instead asking “Tell me more. What am I missing?” ”
