Is this the right kind of hard?”
“”
“I often have clients (and myself!) who think “this is hard, so it must be good for me!” ”
“”
“But there are different types of hard. There’s the hard and discomfort of being a beginner and building a skill, of exercising and working out and building muscle, of stretching your brain, where you are improving how you function in some way. That’s the hard that is good for you, as you are training your mind and body to grow and get stronger.”
“”
“Then there’s the hard that is just suffering. Loneliness, stress, depression. I’d add structural racism and sexism and the power exploitation of late stage capitalism to that list. There is no growth or strength to be derived from these experiences, except for the capacity to endure, and find meaning even in suffering. ”
“”
“So when you are struggling, ask yourself “Is this the right kind of hard?” If you’re not learning or growing in some way, ask for help. Don’t just suffer. Use it as a way to find #connection instead, because suffering shared creates meaning. ”
