How do you escape being overwhelmed?”
“”
“A common anti-pattern for high performers is that they know how to do something well, so they keep doing it because it’s faster for them to do it than teach somebody else to do it. However, this doesn’t scale as their scope increases as it fills their day with less valuable tasks, so they have even less time to teach others. ”

“One way out of this vicious circle is to do the task, but slow down to explain what you’re doing to somebody else. Matt Mochary suggests having them shadow you while doing it and ask questions, Dan Martell suggests video recording yourself doing it while talking through your thought process, and Derek Sivers suggests making the observer write down and document how it’s done after you show them. Follow up by then having them do it while you watch and offer feedback until they do it the way you want. ”

“If you are overloaded, look at how you are spending your time, and pick one task that you don’t want to be doing in a year. Teach somebody else to do it, as outlined above. If you do that every week or two, you will free up your time to do the leadership work that only you can do, and thereby have greater impact. ”

“For those saying they don’t have time to do this, recognize that you are committing yourself to the status quo. Your situation will not change unless you get yourself out of it by making teaching others a top priority. What are you willing to say no to (and accept the consequences of saying no) to change your situation? ”
