How are you building the story you want to tell?

How are you building the story you want to tell?

High performers have many options to choose from at each point in their career. They could work in different industries, they could take different jobs – they just want to work on interesting problems. So how do you choose what to do next?

One possibility is to think about the story you want to tell about yourself when pursuing your next opportunity.
— What are the accomplishments you want to share?
— What are the skills you want to demonstrate?
— What is the knowledge you want to have learned?

These answers could be targeted in the form of “I want to get this title, so these are the skills I need to demonstrate to get hired for that role” or they could be more general of “I want to be known as the person who does X”, where X could be “make companies successful”, “build high powered engineering organizations”, or “organize stuff” (to take three examples from recent coaching conversations).

You are building the brand of you. What are the stories you want people to tell about you?

Think about how you can generate those stories in your job and your life – that’s how you create your brand.
