You can’t do everything you want to do.”

“Many years ago, I was lamenting to a friend that I wasn’t doing everything I wanted to do. He stopped me and said it’s impossible to do everything at once. He then coined the Two Things theory, saying that it’s hard to make more than two major commitments at a time. For most people, that’s their job and their family. You can add one hobby in there, but that’s generally about it. ”

“In the couple decades since then, I’ve experienced the Two Things theory over and over. Over the last twenty years, my non-work Thing was first the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, then a master’s degree in Technology Management, then skiing in Tahoe, and then biking (including the Death Ride and Leadville). But each time, I had to let go of the old Thing to commit to the new Thing. Now I have a family, so that’s my non-work Thing, and I don’t have more capacity beyond that except for my side hobby of writing for a couple hours each week. ”

“Does the Two Things theory match your experience? If so, what are your Two Things? And can you accept putting all the other things you want to do on hold until you give up on one of those Things? ”
