I enjoyed this podcast conversation with Daniel Barrett (who am I kidding, I enjoy every podcast conversation I do!) as we explore a bit of my personal journey, and I share some of the lessons I learned along the way.
One quote that Dan highlighted to spur transformation was to “Set a goal that’s so outrageous that there’s no way you could do it the old way.”
If you set a goal that’s only 5% out of reach, you’re going to do what you were doing before but just a little bit more of it. If you really want to change, then set a goal that’s 2x or 10x out of reach; to achieve that, you’ll have to let go of what previously worked for you, and adopt some completely new behaviors.
This is actually a reminder I needed for myself this week. I’ve been trying to do everything as I have done the last few years, even though I now have 3 kids. I have been beating myself up for not being able to keep up, but maybe it’s time to set some outrageous goal for myself (as I did in writing a book after we had kid 2) to force myself to focus and prioritize better, rather than trying to keep doing everything I was already doing while adding in a new kid.
This morning, we were idly looking at doing a family 5k later this year – maybe instead I should train for a half marathon! 🙂
