Clinician and coach Deb Dana once said “Change happens one nervous system at a time”. When leaders calm themselves down, they allow the people around them to calm down as well. Once they all calm their nervous systems down, they can approach their situations with more thoughtfulness and clarity and collectively make better decisions.
And leaders does not just mean those at the top of the org chart; it can include anybody who is able to regulate their own nervous system so they can stay calm and grounded when others around them are stressed out and falling into a fight-or-flight-or-freeze survival reaction. We humans instinctively mirror those around us, so anybody can be the leader to change the collective reaction.
A couple of my clients asked me to record a grounding practice to settle them down and get them out of their habitual stressful state to reconnect with the clarity and calm they feel in our sessions together. It’s a 5-minute recording that you can use whenever you are about to enter a challenging situation, perhaps a partner negotiation or a meeting with the executive team.
