Life is dynamic and iterative, not static and fixed.”

“Seems obvious, but it’s often at odds with how we act. We are afraid that if we don’t meet the expectations of others, we will disappoint them, so we do nothing rather than risk making a “mistake”. We feel that we only have one chance to make a first impression, and if we make a mistake, we might forever “destroy” our reputation with that person. This is a static view of life, where you can never recover from a single incident. ”

“And yet often the only way to discover the expectations of others is to try something, get their feedback, and iterate from there. In a dynamic world, the other person may see how you are trying to understand them better, and appreciate the effort. Companies that handle customer mishaps gracefully often earn greater respect from the customer as a result. A client of mine suggested an effective way to shift towards this more dynamic mindset is to send out work with the comment “Hey team, how do we make this better?” I love that idea as it reframes the feedback coming back as a way to improve the work, not as a personal criticism.”

“When you notice yourself hesitating to act, I invite you to consider whether it’s easier to act in a dynamic, rather than static, world?”
