What is the real commitment?”
“”
“Many people I know take pride in getting things done, so when they are asked to do something, they leap into action and get to work. And because they are good at getting things done, they get asked to do more, so they inevitably end up overloaded until they learn to say No. They may even like their work, but as one client said: “there’s just too much of it!””
“”
“In my last post, I talked about the gift of No creating the capacity to commit fully to Yes. Similarly, before saying Yes to an ask, I encourage you to ask the asker what they really need, and by when, so that you can clarify the commitment you are making. ”
“”
“One client realized that rather than do custom work, they could offer what they already had, and ask if that would satisfy the need…and sometimes it did! ”
“”
“Another client realized that when they asked a few clarifying questions, the needed work was much less than they feared, or they could point to somebody else who was better suited to do the work.”
“”
“And we all know situations where the deadline is completely artificial, and can easily wait a week or two. ”
“”
“So before you automatically say “Yes” to the next ask, ask a few questions to first understand the commitment you are making.”
