You are not in control. ”

“I find that the gap between my expectations and what happens is what drives suffering. And there’s two ways to close that gap: try to control everything that happens so that it matches my expectations, or manage my expectations to what I can control (I think Buddhists would say don’t get attached to the outcome).”

“If you have what one of my clients calls a “chaos bomb” completely disrupt your plans for the week, you can get angry and resentful that it happened and complain about it. Or you can accept it, figure out what you are going to do differently in light of the new event, and execute on that while clearly communicating why plans have changed. The first is more common. The second is more effective, because you’re not wasting your energy on wishing for an alternate reality. ”

“So what response will you choose when your plans are disrupted? And how will you stay calm and model that for your team?”
