“I did it!”
I hear this many times a day from my 2-year-old daughter, who’s just delighted by everything she can do. Sometimes it’s jumping off a step, sometimes it’s picking up a toy, but whatever it is, she joyfully shouts “I did it!” immediately.
I think we can all learn a lesson from her. Habit researcher BJ Fogg, PhD says that celebration is how we learn new behaviors. So every time my daughter shouts “I did it!”, her brain is rewiring to enable her to more easily do that action in the future.
What would you want to get better at? Maybe it’s time to say “I did it!” with a fist pump when you take even a small action in your desired direction. “I did it!” after you reach out to an acquaintance. “I did it!” when you ask for something you want. “I did it!” when you exercise for even 1 minute.
What are you going to celebrate today?
