Go for Baroque with Upshaw recording

classical CD Reviews

By Georgia Rowe
TIMES CORRESPONDENT

  • WHAT: "Angels Hide Their Faces"
  • WHO: Dawn Upshaw
  • LABEL: Nonesuch
  • GRADE: A
  • CONCERT: Upshaw and pianist Richard Goode will perform a program including works by Bartok, Beethoven, Debussy, Haydn, Ives and Mahler, 8 p.m. April 18 at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Tickets are $30-$52. Call 510-642-9988.

Dawn Upshaw is one of the preeminent vocalists of her generation, and on this luminous new recording of Baroque works by Bach and Henry Purcell, the versatile American soprano is in top form.

The disc's featured work is Bach's Cantata BWV 199: "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut (My heart swims in blood)." Composed in Weimar in 1714 for mezzo-soprano (Upshaw sings the soprano version), the cantata was lost until the early 20th century. On this recording, it amounts to a rediscovered treasure, with a haunting dramatic line well-suited to Upshaw's interpretive gifts, as the soloist traces an emotional arc from guilt and torment, to contrition and hope for absolution, to an outpouring of joy with the acceptance of forgiveness.

Also included are a selection of English songs by Purcell, with "An Evening Hymn," "Music for a While," "If Music Be the Food of Love" and the large-scale "The Blessed Virgin's Expostulation" among the highlights.

The music is artfully paced and eloquently performed. Joined by a top-notch small ensemble that includes violinist Krista Bennion Feeney of the Bay Area-based New Century Chamber Orchestra, Upshaw's cool, articulate vocalism is balm for a weary soul. Highly recommended for Baroque music lovers.

  • WHAT: "Voices 1900/2000: A Choral Journey Through the 20th Century"
  • WHO: San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Vance George conductor
  • LABEL: Delos
  • GRADE: A

Vance George's 200-voice ensemble is one of the San Francisco Symphony's greatest assets, and on this new disc, the chorus' second solo recording, the intrepid director leads his group on a survey of 20th-century works.

It's an astonishingly comprehensive study. In addition to such popular American pieces as Copland's "Simple Gifts," Kern's "All the Things You Are," Bernstein's "Make Our Garden Grow" and the traditional "Shenandoah," the disc covers many of the century's most significant musical developments. From the unabashed romanticism of Randall Thompson's "Alleluia" to the American minimalism of Meredith Monk's "Earth Seen From Above" and "Other Worlds Revealed" (from the composer's opera "Atlas") -- with works by Barber, Debussy, Kernis, Ligeti, Poulenc, Susa and Tavener in between -- it's a rich tapestry of musical impulses and innovations.

Recorded at Davies Symphony Hall, the chorus sounds magnificent with its clean entrances, superb dynamics and beautiful sound, George's ensemble is a model of vocal excellence. This recording may well represent their finest work to date.

  • WHAT: "Bach: Keyboard Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 4"
  • WHO: Murray Perahia, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
  • LABEL: Sony Classical
  • GRADE: A

Those who attended the recent San Francisco Symphony program featuring Murray Perahia and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields won't have to be persuaded to buy this all-Bach disc. There may be no finer pianist than Perahia before the public today, and his relationship with the renowned Academy, with which he serves as principal guest conductor, has been an especially felicitous one.

This recording, a follow-up to Perahia's 2000 disc of Bach's "Goldberg Variations," is the pianist's first in his dual role as conductor/soloist, and the results offer vibrant evidence of his abilities in both assignments. In Bach's keyboard Concertos No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052; Concerto No. 2 in E Major, BWV 1053; and Concerto No. 4 in A Major, BWV 1055, there's an irrepressible spirit and sense of shared purpose in the music-making. A remarkable achievement, captured in warm, well-defined sound.
